The Steinberg Cubase 9.5 Artist is the latest update of one of the most successful and long-running digital audio workstations available. This edition includes some radical changes to both the graphical user interface and tool set, although those familiar with Cubase will still feel at home with Cubase 9.5 Artist.

One of the most obvious changes is the addition of a “Lower Zone” toward the base of the GUI. This is a context sensitive area, changing dependant on the current user focus. The tools selectable in the Lower Zone are the Mix Console, active Editor, Chord Pads and the new Sampler Control. The Mix Console has been improved to facilitate seamless workflow and, while visible in the Lower Zone, allows access to the mix controls whilst still viewing and editing audio in the main track display. Channel strips, inserts and sends each have a dedicated window selectable from the margin of the mix console tab. The undo function can now be applied to changes made in the mix console, and your undo options can now be viewed in a Photoshop style list so almost any mistake or experiment is retractable.

The editor tab is dynamic and will change dependant on the user’s selection – select an audio region and the sample editor appears, whilst a MIDI selection will bring up the MIDI editor and so on. You can even record directly to the editor if so desired. The inspector area to the left of the screen is also dynamic and has a new editor tab to use in conjunction with the lower zone. Dragging a piece of audio into the lower zone opens the new sampler control window and creates a sampler track. This window has been designed to inspire and accommodate creativity in audio processing and features a plethora of tools and filters to manipulate your selection. Within the sampler track is Caleidoscope, a dedicated sample library with hundreds of samples and presets. Any lower zone view can be maximised to full-screen at any moment.

The Production Grooves drum library has been added to satisfy percussion and beats missing from your projects. More than 400 drum loops and presets can be found here to enhance or inspire song writing and creation, all easily brought in from the menus on the right margin.

Cubase’s dynamic and effect plug-ins have also undergone an overhaul, both in terms of functionality and look. An excellent example of this is the Maximizer, which now has an improved algorithm working under the hood. The larger buttons and rotary controls make input easier than ever before, and the new technology makes sound levelling as intuitive and accessible as it can be.

Furthering its reputation as one of the most stable and reliable DAWs available are a handful of additional features. The new Sentinel program scans your entire plug-in library on start-up to check validity and stability. Running in 64bit only guarantees compatibility with modern technology as it is released. Cubase now supports plug’n’play USB devices.

The Artist version of Cubase 9.5 has a number of features not present in Elements. Examples include an enhanced MixConsole history listing, seamless Cloud collaboration and much more.
